General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC(Mil) CVO MC (Retd)
General Peter Cosgrove was appointed Governor General 28 Mar 2014. In his new role he has agreed to continue as Patron of the Foundation - a role he began in 2005.
General Cosgrove retired from the Army as Chief of the Defence Force in 2005. He graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1968, serving in Malaysia and Vietnam where he was awarded the Military Cross.
In 1999 he was appointed Commander of the International Forces East Timor (Interfet), overseeing the fledgling country’s transition to independence, shining as a soldier and diplomat. He was promoted Chief of the Army, and later appointed Chief of the Defence Force.
Peter became a Director on several boards, wrote his memoirs ‘My Story’, before he was appointed Chairman of Operation Recovery Task Force after Cyclone Larry devastated Far North Queensland. He chaired the Gen. Sir John Monash Foundation 2006-2010 and was Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University 2010-2014.
His Excellency was Australian of the Year 2001, is married to Lynne and they have 3 sons.
